Ding Dong Merrily on High

And other Christmas Eve Photos

Linda and Jeff Hayes

The Church of the Resurrection Choir had it’s warmup before the prelude music. Linda and Jeff Hayes played piano duet for the ‘Ding, Dong Merrily on High’ piece. Every time I watch and listen to this talented couple, I think of this other musical couple:

There is an age difference between these two couple, but no difference in their common love of music.

Donovan and John

Donovan and John, two of the famous ‘Brass Attack’, added their voices to this song also.
To finish off this post, here are the arrival photos of the inside and outside nativity scenes.

Everyone has arrived to the Manger scene

Jesus has arrived (again)

Rock Around the Christmas Tree

Animated Figures at Christmas time

We have collected various items that make music, sing, dance or do all three. My Brother Dave had a Santa Claus figure that plays music and sings, “Jingle Bell Rock”. He is gone and I have inherited this Santa and put it out every year to remember him. Leona seems to enjoy the figure too!
I hope you enjoy this as much I enjoy listening to it each year.

Happy 20th of December

The Countdown continues

The Snowman knows

This is one of those crafty things that you purchase through a fundraising catalog from school children. I purchased this from a daughter of a former co-worker, Mark Krietemeyer. Today I was sitting at my dining room table, eating breakfast and was remembering how Mark would share his ‘cute kid stories’, whenever I needed a boost.

Here’s an Internet Hello and Merry Christmas to the Krietemeyer family.

C of R Choir Christmas Party

What Catholics do on a Friday Night

Where all Good Parties start--The Kitchen!

The annual Church of the Resurrection Choir Christmas Party started in the usual place of the ministry center kitchen. Here we have Rachel making guacamole dip, with four supervisors.

The potluck buffet was bountiful

Choir members signed up to bring various hot and cold dishes to the party. So much was brought, that a second table, the white table in the background, was added for all the food.

Talking and Drinking

We have much to do during our rehearsals and often we don’t have time to socialize and talk or drink. This was a BYOB, bring your own bottle or BYOD, bring your own drink, event. Beverages ranged from soft drinks, wine, and mixed drinks.

Jeff makes a bright entrance

Jeff Hayes makes a bright entrance to the party with his electric bow tie.

After we eat, we socialize more.

And more talking.

After round one of the bountiful buffet, we continue our socializing.
The fun activity was a rousing game of team Jeopardy. We were divided into Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass and Instrumentalists. The categories were: The Bible, Gather Hymnal, Liturgy, Song Titles and Potpourri. We had the three rounds of Jeopardy, Double Jeopardy and Final Jeopardy.

Christmas Decorations

The Best Part of Christmas Decorations

Snowflake, Foxes and Penguins

Decorating the Christmas tree is usually a multiple day event, but this year the setup and decorating was all done in one day. Back when we would have a cut Christmas tree, the first step was bringing the tree inside and placing into the stand. The tree would need to settle, so it would be plain in the stand for a day or two. The next step would be to put the lights on the tree. I would always forget to wear a long sleeve shirt and would get prickled by the needles. Putting the ornaments on the tree would be a family event, complete with Christmas music. Lately it hasn’t been that much fun for everyone and I have been tired of encouraging participation. So, this year, I started decorating right after putting up the tree.

Coca-Cola Penguins

Over the course of our marriage and family, we have accumulated many ornaments. So, as I look through the ornament storage box and handle each item, I remember the history of the various ornaments.

This is what started me decorating the tree. I had received an ornament that plugged into one of the Christmas tree lights and decided to plug it into a spot where there was a burned out bulb. That started to the next ornament and then the next.

Santa on the Tree

Since I was born on Christmas, I now have a lot of ornaments on the tree that originally were on my birthday cake. Santa with the wreath is one of those decorations.

Bubbling light

My parents had bubbling lights on their Christmas tree. I found this light set a few years ago and starting putting it on our tree to remember Christmas’s past.
We have Baby’s first Christmas, homemade ornaments, and Teenage Ninja Turtles. Penguins on peppermints, and on cars. Big penguins and little ones two. There are ornaments that are remembrance of trips to both the Corn Palace and San Francisco.
There is a life story on this tree. Is that how your Christmas tree is?

Advent Decorations at Church of the Resurrection

The Procession of Mary and Joseph to the Manger Scene

Mike and I have been attending this church for several years now. I just realized that the indoor nativity is not complete and that the various niches in the main church has the various statues on their way to the manger scene.

Manager Scene

These are the photos after the Sunday, December 11th service. The indoor nativity scene is located to the right of the altar. The only occupants are some animals.

Mary and Joseph in first niche.

Mary and Joseph statues are located in the first niche, just to the right of the manger scene.

Shepherd and sheep

Next are the statues of sheep and their shepherd.

Alter Decorations

The alter is decorated in shades of blue, which is the main color for advent. Each pillar has a banner with the theme of each week of Watch, Prepare and Rejoice. Next Sunday, another banner will be added and the statues will move to different niches.

More Sheep coming from the other side.

Here are more sheep migrating from the left side of the church.

Another Shepherd

Here is another shepherd, who appears to be calling the sheep (from the previous niche).
What a wonderful tradition to show the progression of the Advent season.

Stolen from Facebook!

Leona is a Party Animal!

Every year, is a tradition to wear your ugly Christmas sweater and party. I’m not sure which sweater is ugly. Perhaps Leona spit up on all of the ugly sweaters and they needed to change back into normal clothes. The cast of misfits are: Louis Doenges, Leona Doenges, Kevin Doenges, Rob Doenges & Jonathan Doenges in the rear row and Edgar Fox, the other uncle to Leona, in the foreground.

Music and Dogs

Regular and Furry Friends

Musicians invade the Choir

Yesterday was my regular choir rehearsal, with a emphasis on preparing for Christmas. We will be singing “Ding, Dong Merrily on High” as a prelude piece for the Christmas Eve Mass. There is only piano music, so several of the orchestra members joined the choir to sing. Chuck, the man on the left, had said that he would never sing, just play an instrument, has changed his mind now. Donovan and Dana, often sing in the choir. CORRECTION: Chuck told me later “he doesn’t often sing”. The blur on the right hand side, is from our Choir director, Thom, as he conducts the Choir.

After Mike Leaves, Another Comes to Bed

After Mike left the house for his school bus driving job, Cooper decided to jump into bed. I think he prefers the heat from the waterbed. Cooper is still pretty shy, but his personality is coming out and he is venturing into different activities, like sleeping on the bed. If you try to lay on the other side of the bed, Cooper will leave. He may like the warmth, but doesn’t like the rock’n’roll of the waterbed.

Time for a Change!

A Couple of My Favorite People

I have been posting many photos of little Leona and it was time to put this cutie at the top of the page. She is 3 months old in this photo. This is a beautiful time to take photos as she is focusing and seeing you. Hopefully, she has not become blind from all the flashing lights of cameras.
